We call on the Parliament to establish a Royal Commission of Inquiry into:

The health, social, economic, and law enforcement costs of the Drug Prohibition.

The laws do not stop people from using drugs or protect families. After 50 years of harsh enforcement, illicit drugs are more available than ever.

  • Both recreational drugs and PEDs/steroids when sold on the black market can cause serious damage, we shouldn’t be using these draconian laws that actively harm drug users. Decriminalisation will help users get their fix legally and safely as it means cutting out criminal organisations from the equation.

  • Australia’s strictly drugs laws have failed and have done nothing to reduce use and have only made it harder to reduce harms in a moral and non-carceral way. Portugal’s example shows there are better models
  • I believe that funded rehabilitation programs right from the first criminal acts committed whilst under the influence of drugs should be the way instead of throwing them into a prison system that eats them up for the rest of their lives. I also know the seriousness of some of the crimes need to be recognised but maybe in a drug only court that has different rules giving offenders a chance or 3 through programs that are alternative to prison and law punishment before they have to use the law if the offender is hurting others as a result after such programs are referred. At least a year in a residential 4 stage rehab or 10 months would help those people and not be in the system. In hindsight realistically the system needs all these prisoners for the upkeep of their jobs, services, etc the country thrives financially off the addicts of this country. The justice system is the most degrading and politically incorrect of any system here in Australia. I think that there should be more money funded into rehab and support workers rather then prison guards and prisoners and more money into drug alternative education and programs. Mind you many people on drugs would rather go to jail then do this but that is because they have been stuck in addiction and the prison system for too long and they have created the ideal that they are that person that wants to use drugs. That is sad that our laws allow this to happen and those people end up dead, in jail for many years, losing there kids, and dealing drugs to a large number of society. I am referring to narcotics and opioid drugs etc

    They taking people’s licenses also that leads to boredom and restriction which leads to more drugs. Drug addiction is a loss of control in the ability to stop or reduce the drug. So having to be ordered for the education of what it means to be an addict and how to overcome that would serve so many people save lives save the community and whether a non residential order to start with based on the same learning’s as a four stage rehab to start would be good. The law is only producing more drug use with less likely chance of ever getting sober and less % of people actually understanding what is behind their addiction for them
